The King

King David was the greatest king in Israel’s history. God used him mightily to bring about peace and stability to God’s people, the Israelites. While David was certainly a flawed man, there were certain qualities and characteristics about him that emulated the gracious and good God he served. David had a best friend, Jonathan. Prior to his death in battle, King David vowed to look after any person belonging to the house of Jonathan. Enter Mephibo.

Mephibosheth

Mephibo is actually a shortened version (nickname) for Mephibosheth. Mephibosheth, which means “dispeller of shame,” or “shame destroyer”, was the son of Jonathan who had been crippled at an early age. One day David asks one of his servants to see if there were any relatives of Jonathan still living. Ziba, his servant, told David about Mephibosheth. David sends out a royal invitation to Mephibosheth and invites him to become part of the king’s house. Thus, the king’s house becomes Mephibo’s house. What David did for Mephibosheth, the King of King and Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ, does for all human beings—regardless of who they are—He invites them into His house.
